What is Suica Mobile Payment?

Launched on November 18, 2001, Suica (Super Urban Intelligent CArd) is a prepaid electronic money and transit fare system developed by JR East. The system allows users to load funds onto a physical card or mobile app to pay for train and bus rides as well as retail and convenience store purchases throughout Japan. The Mobile Suica app extends this functionality to smartphones, with users managing their balance and transit passes digitally. Suica operates on a strictly prepaid, deposit-based model with no recurring subscription fees — charges to users reflect transit fares and retail spending drawn from their loaded balance.
