What is MTA Metrocard?
MTA MetroCard is the primary fare payment system for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's subway and bus network in New York City. Riders can load pay-per-ride value or purchase time-limited unlimited ride passes (7-day or 30-day) onto the card. The MetroCard is a legacy system currently being phased out in favor of OMNY, a modern contactless tap-to-pay system. All purchases are prepaid and non-subscription-based, requiring manual repurchase each cycle.
