What is Clipper Card?

Administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), Clipper Card enables seamless fare payment across nearly all Bay Area public transit services using a single contactless smart card or mobile virtual card. Riders can load cash value or purchase transit passes and use the card across agencies including BART, Muni, Caltrain, and many more. The system offers specialized programs such as Clipper START (50% discounts for income-qualified adults), Clipper Access (for riders with disabilities), and Clipper BayPass (a regional transit pass pilot). Clipper operates on a pay-as-you-go model with no recurring subscription fees; the only cost is an optional $3.00 one-time fee for a physical adult card, which can be waived by enrolling in Autoload.
